🇭🇺 Grandma’s Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage (Töltött Káposzta)

Cabbage rolls:

  • 1 large head of sour cabbage (or regular cabbage, softened)
  • 500 g ground pork (or pork + beef mix)
  • 100 g rice (uncooked)
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 tbsp oil

Sauce:

  • 500 g sauerkraut (optional but traditional)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1–2 bay leaves
  • Water or broth
  • 1–2 tbsp flour (optional for thickening)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Separate cabbage leaves and soften them in hot water if needed.
  2. Mix meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place filling in each leaf and roll tightly.
  4. In a large pot, layer sauerkraut (if using), rolls, and bay leaves.
  5. Add water or broth until covered.
  6. Simmer on low heat for 1.5–2 hours.
  7. Mix tomato paste with paprika and add near the end.
  8. Serve hot, often with sour cream on top.
