Cabbage rolls:
- 1 large head of sour cabbage (or regular cabbage, softened)
- 500 g ground pork (or pork + beef mix)
- 100 g rice (uncooked)
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt & pepper
- 1 tbsp oil
Sauce:
- 500 g sauerkraut (optional but traditional)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1–2 bay leaves
- Water or broth
- 1–2 tbsp flour (optional for thickening)
👩‍🍳 Instructions
- Separate cabbage leaves and soften them in hot water if needed.
- Mix meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Place filling in each leaf and roll tightly.
- In a large pot, layer sauerkraut (if using), rolls, and bay leaves.
- Add water or broth until covered.
- Simmer on low heat for 1.5–2 hours.
- Mix tomato paste with paprika and add near the end.
- Serve hot, often with sour cream on top.
