Hungarian Fried Bread (Lángos)

Ingredients:

  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 7 g dry yeast (or 25 g fresh yeast)
  • 300 ml warm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Oil for frying

Optional Toppings:

  • Sour cream
  • Grated cheese
  • Minced garlic mixed with a little water
  • Butter

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let stand for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and oil, then mix to form a soft dough.
  4. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover and let rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Divide the dough into 6–8 portions and shape each into a flat round.
  7. Heat oil in a deep pan to 175°C (350°F).
  8. Fry each piece of dough for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  9. Drain on paper towels.
