Hungarian Apple Cake (Almás Pite)
Ingredients:
Dough:
- 400 g all-purpose flour
- 200 g butter (cold, cubed)
- 100 g sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 2–3 tbsp sour cream or milk
Apple filling:
- 1–1.2 kg apples (grated)
- 80–120 g sugar (to taste)
- 1–2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1–2 tbsp semolina or breadcrumbs (to absorb juice)
Instructions:
- Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and butter until crumbly.
- Add egg and sour cream (or milk) and knead into a soft dough.
- Divide dough into two parts, wrap, and chill for 30 minutes.
- Grate apples and squeeze lightly to remove excess juice.
- Mix apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Roll out one dough piece and place in a baking tray.
- Sprinkle semolina or breadcrumbs over the base.
- Add apple filling evenly.
- Cover with second dough layer and press edges.
- Bake for 35–45 minutes until golden.
- Let cool, then slice.
