After making this bread at home, you may never want to buy a loaf from the store again! 🍞😍

There’s something special about homemade bread: the smell filling the kitchen, the golden crust, and that soft, warm center waiting to be sliced.

This easy Dutch Oven Bread requires just a handful of basic ingredients and produces a beautifully rustic loaf with a crisp, golden crust and a tender, chewy interior. It’s perfect for breakfast, sandwiches, soups, or simply spreading with butter while it’s still warm.

🍞 Ingredients

  • 4¾ cups (570 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1⅓ cups (320 ml) warm water
  • 1 tablespoon (10 g) dry yeast
  • 4 tablespoons (60 ml) olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt

👩‍🍳 How to Make Homemade Bread

1. Activate the Yeast

Pour the warm water into a large mixing bowl.

Add the dry yeast and stir gently. Let it sit for approximately 5–10 minutes, until the yeast becomes slightly foamy.

The water should be warm, not hot.

2. Make the Dough

Add the olive oil and salt.

Gradually add the flour, mixing with a wooden spoon or your hands until a soft dough forms.

Once the dough becomes difficult to stir, transfer it to a lightly floured surface.

3. Knead

Knead the dough for approximately 8–10 minutes, until it becomes smoother and elastic.

If the dough feels extremely sticky, add a small amount of flour at a time. Avoid adding too much, as this can make the bread dense.

4. Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl.

Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and leave it in a warm, draft-free place for approximately 1–1½ hours, or until it has noticeably increased in size.

5. Shape the Loaf

Gently press the dough down to release excess air.

Shape it into a round loaf.

Place it on a piece of parchment paper and cover it again. Let it rest for another 20–30 minutes while you prepare the oven.

6. Preheat the Dutch Oven

Place your Dutch oven, with its lid, inside the oven.

Preheat to 450°F (230°C) and allow the pot to heat thoroughly.

7. Bake

Carefully remove the hot Dutch oven.

Using the parchment paper, lower the dough into the pot.

For a rustic appearance, make a shallow slash across the top of the dough with a sharp knife.

Cover with the lid.

Bake for approximately 25 minutes covered.

Then carefully remove the lid and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, or until the loaf is deeply golden brown.

8. Cool Before Slicing

Remove the bread from the Dutch oven and place it on a wire rack.

Allow it to cool for at least 30–45 minutes before slicing.

It may be tempting to cut into it immediately, but allowing it to cool helps the interior finish setting properly.

🥖 Why Dutch Oven Bread Turns Out So Good

The Dutch oven creates a hot, enclosed environment that helps the bread develop a beautiful crust while retaining moisture inside the loaf.

The result is a rustic loaf with a crisp exterior and soft, flavorful center.

And you don’t need a bread machine or any special baking equipment beyond a suitable oven-safe Dutch oven.

💡 Tips for Perfect Homemade Bread

Don’t make the water too hot.
Very hot water can damage the yeast. Aim for comfortably warm water.

Don’t add too much flour.
A slightly soft dough generally produces a lighter loaf.

Give the dough enough time to rise.
The rising time can vary depending on the temperature of your kitchen.

Preheat the Dutch oven properly.
A hot pot helps create that signature crust.

Let the bread cool.
Cutting it too early can make the center appear gummy.
