If you’re looking for a Christmas cookie that disappears almost as quickly as you put it on the dessert table, these Pecan Praline Cookies are a must-try.

They’re buttery, nutty, caramelized, and packed with toasted pecans. The combination of a tender cookie base and a sweet pecan topping makes every bite incredibly satisfying.

This is also one of those nostalgic recipes that feels right at home during the holidays. In fact, this recipe is so popular in my family that I bake at least 400 cookies every Christmas—and they never seem to last very long!

🍪 Ingredients

For the Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the Pecan Topping

  • 2 cups chopped pecans
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

👩‍🍳 How to Make Pecan Praline Cookies

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix just until a soft dough forms.

Step 2: Shape the Cookies

Scoop the dough into small portions and place them on the prepared baking sheets, leaving enough space between each cookie.

Gently flatten each portion with your fingers or the bottom of a glass.

Step 3: Make the Pecan Praline Topping

Add the butter, brown sugar, milk, and salt to a small saucepan over medium-low heat.

Stir until the butter melts and the mixture becomes smooth.

Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and chopped pecans.

Step 4: Add the Topping

Spoon a small amount of the pecan mixture over each cookie.

Try to keep the topping centered so it stays on the cookie while baking.

Step 5: Bake

Bake for approximately 10–13 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the cookies are set.

Don’t overbake them—the centers should remain tender.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

✨ Why These Cookies Are So Special

The magic is in the contrast.

The cookie itself is soft and buttery, while the pecan topping becomes slightly crisp and caramelized as it bakes.

The result is a cookie with:

Buttery texture + toasted pecans + brown sugar sweetness + irresistible praline flavor.

It’s exactly the kind of cookie that makes people ask:

“Can I get the recipe?”

🎄 Perfect for Christmas

These cookies are wonderful for:

  • Christmas cookie trays
  • Holiday parties
  • Cookie exchanges
  • Homemade gifts
  • Family gatherings
  • Dessert tables
  • Santa’s cookie plate 🎅

If you’re making a large batch, let the cookies cool completely before stacking them so the praline topping doesn’t stick together.

💡 Tips for the Best Pecan Praline Cookies

Toast the pecans first.
A few minutes of gentle toasting can bring out their natural nutty flavor.

Use softened butter.
Room-temperature butter helps create a smoother cookie dough.

Don’t overbake.
The cookies will continue to firm up as they cool.

Let them cool completely.
The praline topping becomes firmer as it cools.

Make them ahead.
Once completely cooled, store them in an airtight container at room temperature.
